Oculus Rift - virtual reality glasses, which, according to the creators, provided a wider field of vision than earlier developments

The device was created by Oculus VR (initially about 20 employees), which received funding of $ 91 million, of which 2.4 million was collected on the Kickstarter crowdsfinding platform . The company was founded by Palmer Lucky  and John Carmack (later became CTO in Oculus VR)

The developer kit of the first version (DK1) is sold from the summer of 2013. The second version for developers (DK2) became available in July 2014.  By the end of 2014, more than 100,000 development kits were sold . The consumer version (CV1) is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2016

 

On March 25, 2014, Oculus VR was acquired by Facebook for $ 2 billion; although up to this point Oculus Rift was positioned exclusively as a device for computer games, the head of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg announced that he sees in Oculus Rift and virtual reality devices the basis for a new generation of computer technologies that goes to replace smartphones
